Safeguarding

In the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), it is pointed out that the term “safeguarding” means ensuring the viability of intangible cultural heritage and the term also includes identification, documentation, research, preservation, protection, development, reinforcement and especially transmission through formal and non-formal education and revitalization of various parts of this heritage. Besides, in the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005), it is stated as part of sustainable development that, cultural diversity is a determinant quality of humanity, it builds up common heritage of humanity, it should be cherished and safeguarded with all its contents for the benefit of all. On that sense, conventions signal the changes in approaches to protecting of culture from the perspective of 19th and first half of 20th century based on identification, collection and archive to the viewpoint of second half of 20th century and today referring to safeguarding, transmission and revitalization of intangible cultural heritage in its context.

Association of Intangible Cultural Heritage Institute aims to contribute to awareness raising of NGOs on the issue, guide them and ensure that the policies are integrated into application in order to secure the safeguarding, transmission and viability of cultural heritage. Moreover, among the other aims of the Association are to collaborate with local authorities, participate in national and international cultural heritage projects, join the agencies and organizations related with national or international cultural heritage, organize events that enable active participation of civil society or provide academic support to other organizations.
